Adding a leaflet addControl() object to a layer group?

addControl() seems to be the only add... method that doesn't have a group = parameter. This is consistent with the Javascript library, but the .js library DOES have an addLayer() method for the layer class which can be used to add arbitrary layerIDs to a group. Can this be accomplished with the R package? This is not for a shiny app,BTW. Thanks.

PS. It might be worthwhile to add a leaflet category to the community.
