It looks like you were right then in the end, no? It looks like there is no modify in place in this case since the address does change. No??? This is the same result you were getting in RStudio (I think?), but this time, we cannot blame it on RStudio. So I think that in this case, R cannot apply the modify in place and does make a copy. No? Am getting something wrong? It has been a while since we chatted about it all and I have forgotten this a bit since then...
