Best machine learning algorithm for binary classification in R

I am a new R learner. I am trying to develop a binary classification model with outcomes as 0, and 1. Which machine learning algorithm would be the best? I have 18 variables and more than 100,000 observations.

I would try xgboost.

I have variables of different classes such as character and integer.

Yes, I would assume so.
