Can't get rstan examples to work

I've copied Ben Goodrich's rstan demo project and updated all my packages, but still can't seem to get even the simplest linear regression examples to compile. My difficulties seem similar to those Kristian Brock reported in early March

I'd like to demonstrate rstan to students, so would be grateful for any advice.

Compiling Stan models doesn't work with rstan 2.18.x and later with the 1GB RAM limitation on RStudio Cloud.
