Can't show file & terminal at the same time

I'm certain this wasn't the default behavior, but for a while now, when working on a stand-alone file, I can only view the file or the terminal. If I send something to the terminal (ctrl+alt+enter), the terminal opens up and takes up the whole screen. Is there a way to send code to the terminal, observe the run status, and keep editing the original file without having to keep switching between windows? In other words, have half the screen the file and the other half terminal without the blow-up effect?

As an added question, is it also possible to get the other screens to stay on the IDE permanently, like the enviroment and help panel? They disappeared around the same time I noticed this issue. Only time I see them is when working on a project.
