Configuration of database file location

I'm updating the EasyBuild recipe for RStudio-Server and when I run verify-installation there is a permission denied error, relating to the attempted creation of /var/lib/rstudio-server.
Other files are stored there too, I imagine.

Is there a way of specifying a different location for that directory? I saw there were recent changes relating to support of XDG environment variables, but it wasn't immediately clear whether they covered this case.
An option that works at build-time or run-time is equally fine.
