Dropdown control for type of new file is missing

There is a usually a small green cross for selecting the type of a new file in the source editor. That control, and actually that whole bar is missing for my 1.1.383 version running on Windows 10 on a surface book.
I can still click on file and select the type of new file.

Is it possible that you've accidentally hidden the global toolbar? If so, there should be a command from the main menu called View -> Show Toolbar; if I'm understanding your issue correctly, that should fix the issue.

That was exactly the problem. I must have accidentally clicked on that while I was looking for something else. I looked in global options for the control, but never thought to look at view.
