How to deal with Error 24 (Too many open files)

I am running R 4.1.1 on RStudio 1.4.1717, on Ubuntu 21.04. I have 32Gb RAM, which should be plenty.

When I start up Rstudio these days, I get the following warning:

Warning message:
File monitoring failed for project at ....
Error 24 (Too many open files)
Features disabled: R source file indexing, Diagnostics

What should I do? And what does it mean for file monitoring, file indexing, and diagnostics to fail?
