how to model response variable vs variables

Hi, I need help with what type of modelling to use with my problem.

I need to model a univariate response variable against two variables, call x and y.

In the question, 4 planting fields are used, and in each planting field there's 4 plots (so i have 16 data recordings).

We are asked to investigate the effect of X and Y - but the X and Y variables vary for each plot (ie. X is large, Y is large; X is small, Y is large, ect.) - we need to find the best combination of them, I assume.

I just want a help towards what sort of model sounds useful? Would appreciate anyone who could assist me in solving this, thank you!

The olsrr package has functions for stepwise forward and backward variable selection and model assessment.
