This ones been giving me some trouble today..
I have a few hundred .xls workbooks which i want to combine into one large workbook (or ideally one large sheet) could anyone help me out here?

How much help do you need? What's your level of expertise? Is pointing to some packages/functions enough for you?
You'd need to look into the purrr::map() function (or one of its flavors), combined with your function of choice for importing a single .xls spreadsheet.
