R API to regional economic data

I was wondering if there is any R package that offers API to regional economic data, such as housing price by city or county, unemployment rate by state, etc.

Begin with tidycensus with the 2017 Census ASC estimates out. I'll check to see if there's an R package to access FRED

Thanks for the reply. census data has a pretty low frequency, which does not suite my purpose. I can access FRED using quantmod.

Thanks for the pointer to quantmod. Just in case, although the official census has 10-year periodicity, the annual estimates, which are almost as rich, are annual and include confidence intervals. Plus, they are geocoded at multiple levels, which allows cross-analysis of economic and demographic data.
