R Markdown unicode characters

I am trying to include the below into my r markdown but getting an error message. I tried using the $$ which seem to convert correctly but when converting to PDF i get the unicode error message

  $$λ ∼ Gamma(g, h)$$
  $$λ ∼ Exponential(z)$$
  $$λ ∼ Uniform(a, b)$$
