Reason for adding 'after =' when appending vectors?

I have ran the 'i = append(a,g,after=6)' (see below) with the 'after =6' and without. The result has been the same in the console as
'[1] 1.0000000 2.0000000 3.0000000 4.0000000 5.0000000 6.0000000
[7] 0.0000000 0.6931472 1.0986123 1.3862944 1.6094379 1.7917595
[13] 1.9459101 2.0794415'
My question is what is the 'after =' purpose?

(a <- c(1,2,3,4,5,6))
b <- 2*a
c <- a+b
f <- c(1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8)
g <- log(f)
i = append(a,g,after=6)

Try a smaller number for the after parameter.like 1 or 2
