recent project and recent file lists frozen and cannot be cleared

I am running rstudio on windows 10 and I am having a problem with the GUI.

In the file menu, the recent files list and recent projects list do not change. In other words, the only files or projects in both lists are files that I last used months ago. None of the files or projects that I have worked on recently are listed. Also, the "Clear List" and "Clear Project List" commands do not work. The lists do not clear.

Today, I uninstalled and reinstalled R and RStudio, but the same old lists showed up - as well as the same old behavior.

Does anybody know what is going on?

Have you tried reseting Rstudio's state?
