I just installed both R-base and RStudio on a Linux Mint computer and found out that the top panel shows a different language other than english or spanish (which should be my case). Actually, they're all mixed:

Not a solution, but it looks like Greek to me. Do you have any idea why it would default to Greek in your case?
The weird part is, the characters are Greek, but the words are English:
Τοολσ
Τ = tau (T)
ο = omicron (O)
λ = lambda (L)
σ = sigma (S)

Can you run sessionInfo() and post the results here? I'm thinking it has something to do with your operating system's locale info.
