RStudio Not accessing Windows 10 files

I have been using RStudio for about 1/2 a year (mostly for writing college reports with templates), and have loved it - until recently when I could not access anything on the Windows file system from within RStudio. That is I cannot open, or save any file that I create ( I can still create new r scripts ). Nor can I access any of the templates.

I get the following error "The system cannot find the path specified"
Additionally, if I try to close RStudio immediately after this error, RStudio has a fatal error where it needs to restart R session.
I am running Windows 10 Pro, version 1909, build 18363.720,

and the problem initially surfaced using RStudio 1.2.5033, (which I had upgraded from 1.2.1335)
with R 3.6.3.

I've done multiple searches for solutions, and while some of the symptoms were the same, none of the solutions have worked (from RStudio Community, Microsoft, StackOverflow... others)

I've tried:

  • uninstalling RStudio and reinstalling
  • uninstall/reinstall of RStudio and R. (here I also tracked down any R related in AppData and deleted it)
  • uninstall / install downgrades of RStudio and R (back to 1.2.1335 and 3.6.2 respectively)
  • Checking for any permissions denial issues that could be coming from windows Defender

I've discovered that I can edit save files from R run in a terminal, so it seems to just be with RStudio that this problem is persisting.

This is frustrating in that the application was working fine within the last 2 weeks, and also I have several multi-page papers that are already written within RMarkdown templates.

Thanks for taking the time to share a diagnostics report.

One thing I notice here:

The trailing separator on this environment variable can cause issues with RStudio. If you check and edit your environment variables, do you see that same path? Does removing the trailing slash make a difference?

You might also try using the preview release of RStudio, to see if you have any better luck there.

Thanks - that really helped. I still have to reinstall a whole mess of packages, but I can now access all of my file system.
A real life saver.
