Apply for the Software Engineer, R Markdown at RStudio PBC

RStudio creates great software that helps people understand data and make better decisions in real-world applications. Our core is an open-source data science toolchain and we aim to make it available to everyone, regardless of their economic means.

The R Markdown ecosystem has grown extensively over the past five years. It has gone from a package that supports a few output formats, to one that has been extended to support the creation of books, blogs, scientific articles, websites and even resumes. Our open source engineering team is looking to add a talented engineer who is passionate about creating and maintaining packages that make it easier to tackle a variety of publishing needs. You will be working directly with Yihui Xie who created or coauthored such packages as: knitr, rmarkdown, bookdown, blogdown, rticles, tufte, pagedown, xaringan and tinytex.

Key Responsibilities

  • Help maintain the R packages, mainly including rmarkdown, knitr, bookdown, rticles. Occasionally we may also need your help on blogdown, xaringan, tufte, pagedown, DT, and a few other packages.
  • Triage Github issues of these packages routinely, and fix high-priority issues.
  • Identify important bugs reported and features requested elsewhere (e.g. RStudio Community and Stack Overflow).

Required qualifications

  • Experience with developing R packages. Ideally, you should have at least one package published on CRAN, or a couple of R packages on Github.
  • Familiarity with GIT and Github. You frown upon seeing .DS_Store in a GIT repo, and know how to use git rebase -i. You have sent, reviewed, and/or merged pull requests before.
  • Curiosity and willingness to learn the internals of R Markdown and knitr.
  • Basic knowledge about HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and LaTeX.
  • Strong debugging skills in R (and sometimes in JavaScript).
  • Clear written or verbal communication (written communication is slightly preferred).
  • Patience with users’ questions and requests.

Desired qualifications

  • Experience with customizing R Markdown (e.g., using a custom Pandoc template, a custom stylesheet, or LaTeX preamble). We will be even more excited if you have written any Pandoc Lua filters before.
  • Contributor of any packages in the R Markdown ecosystem through pull requests.
  • Discipline in managing distractions and belief in deep work.

About us

  • We welcome all talented engineers and are committed to a culture that represents diversity in all its forms.
  • We prioritize giving engineers “focus time” to get deep work done. We minimize meetings and attempt to operate asynchronously.
  • We are a learning organization and take mentorship and career growth seriously. We hope to learn from you and we anticipate that you will also deepen your skills, influence, and leadership as a result of working at RStudio.
  • We operate under a unique sustainable business model: 50% of engineering we do at RStudio is open source. We are profitable and we plan to be around twenty years from now.

  • 100% distributed team (or come in to one of our offices in Seattle or Boston) with minimal travel
  • Competitive compensation with great benefits including:
  • medical/dental/vision insurance (100% of premiums covered)
  • 401k matching
  • a home office allowance or reimbursement for a coworking space
  • a profit-sharing system
  • Flexible environment with a generous vacation policy

RStudio is committed to being a diverse and inclusive workplace. We encourage applicants of different backgrounds, cultures, genders, experiences, abilities, and perspectives to apply.
