Job Description

Type of employment: Full-time employee or contractor
Location: Houston, TX (preferred but may consider remote work)

Data Analyst

We are looking for a creative problem solver who is passionate about
data science and programming and is interested in learning about
reservoir engineering, geology, and the oil and gas business. As a data
analyst, you will work on our data science team capturing, exploring,
analyzing, and visualizing data to help solve critical problems and make
new insights. You’ll also be building data products and tools that help
our geologists and engineers improve on existing workflows as well as
enabling entirely new workflows by bringing to bear new technologies.

The tech stack you can expect at Ryder Scott Company includes: R,
Shiny, Plumber, JavaScript, Docker, Git, HTML, CSS, Excel, PostgreSQL,
Microsoft SQL Server, and Spotfire.


Your responsibilities will include:

  • Data wrangling, exploration, and visualization
  • Creating self-service tools for data exploration and visualization
  • Data preparation including sourcing, merging, cleaning and
  • Providing training to technical staff outside of the data science
  • Oversee the creation of data products from end-to-end including
    gathering requirements, defining scope, delivering on development,
    testing, and maintenance.
  • Writing documentation and unit tests
  • Creating dynamic reports
  • Identifying and defining opportunities for improvement and

    other groups in the organization



  • Very good programming and problem solving skills
  • Experience with relational databases and ETL tasks
  • Organized, and self-starting with strong ethics
  • The ability to show initiative by identifying work that needs to be
    done without the need for supervision
  • Strong verbal and written communication in English
  • Willingness to learn basic petroleum engineering and geoscience
  • Must show proof to legally be able to work in the United States


  • At least an undergraduate-level degree in a field of quantitative
    study (e.g., computer science, engineering, applied mathematics,
    statistics, etc.)
  • Proficiency with the R programming language
  • At least 2 years of relevant work experience
  • Ability to communicate at both technical and executive level of
    detail, especially in explaining complex topics to those new to the
    subject area
