Job Description

Type of employment: Full-time employee or contractor
Location: Houston, TX (preferred but may consider remote work)

Shiny Developer

We are looking for a specialist who is passionate about designing and
creating production-grade Shiny web applications and is also passionate
about development in R. The ideal candidate should be interested in
learning about reservoir engineering, geology, and the oil and gas
business. As a R/Shiny developer, you will work on our data science team
designing and creating applications that help our geologists and
engineers improve on existing workflows as well as enabling entirely new
workflows for our technical staff and our clients as well. Your focus
will primarily be on Shiny app development, we have another R developer
who will be focused on back end development, but you may be asked to
provide support for back-end development on occasion as well.

The tech stack you can expect at Ryder Scott Company includes: R,
Shiny, Plumber, JavaScript, Docker, Git, HTML, CSS, Excel, PostgreSQL,
Microsoft SQL Server, and Spotfire.

Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Build and maintain high-quality, production-grade Shiny web
    applications
  • Creating self-service tools for data exploration and visualization
  • Responsible for entire lifecycle of projects or features including
    design, development, testing, and maintenance
  • Communicate with company stakeholders to proactively identify
    problems and opportunities for new features or applications
  • Rebuild and refine existing Shiny applications
  • Provide training and mentorship to other team members
  • Work with IT for application deployment and maintenance
  • Optimize applications for performance

Qualifications

Required:

  • 5+ years of R development experience
  • 2+ years of Shiny development experience
  • 2+ years of JavaScript, HTML, CSS experience
  • Experience building advanced Shiny applications
  • Experience extending Shiny applications with JavaScript
  • Experience building user-friendly and feature rich Shiny
    applications without input from UX/UI designer
  • Experience with key software development frameworks (e.g., version
    control, unit testing, shiny modules, etc.)
  • Organized, and self-starting with the ability to show initiative by
    identifying work that needs to be done without the need for
    supervision
  • Strong verbal and written communication in English
  • Willingness to learn basic petroleum engineering and geoscience
    concepts
  • Must show proof to legally be able to work in the United States

Preferred:

  • At least an undergraduate-level degree in a field of quantitative
    study (e.g., computer science, engineering, applied mathematics,
    statistics, etc.)
  • Experience with mapping and geospatial data
  • Experience with time-series data
  • Experience with interactive visualizations
  • Familiarity with golem is a plus
  • At least 5 years of relevant work experience
  • Ability to communicate at both technical and executive level of
    detail, especially in explaining complex topics to those new to the
    subject area
