For generating PDF output, I specify dev: cairo_pdf in my yaml-header.
For word_document (docx format) output, RMarkdown does not accept any dev option at all.
This is as far as I can see the reason why I end up with PDF images, which result in a lot of placeholders or empty frames when embedded in my docx file.
PDF output via LaTeX results in beautiful output.
