When there are special characters in text this is usually saved as UTF-8. The easiest way to read in these csv files is to use the readr function read_csv(). This one detects UTF-8 and loads the data in properly. Alternatively, you can specify the encoding in the base function like so: read.csv("mydata.csv", encoding = "UTF-8")
