Unable to start RStudio - 'R Session has become unresponsive'

When I start up RStudio, it hangs on the 'chasing circle' and after 30 seconds I get an alert stating 'The RStudio server is taking a long time to respond. It is possible that your R session has become unresponsive.' I terminate R and then I get a white screen where I'm unable to select any of the menus. I have uninstalled both R and RStudio, restarted my laptop and then installed R 3.5.1 and RStudio 1.1456. I still have the same issue.

I found some posts about using a VPN with R then going to a network and that doesn't appear to be the issue. I can't start RStudio when I'm connected to my local network or via VPN.

I was unable to run the diagnostics from within RStudio but was able to get it from the command line. I have pasted the output below. Any ideas what else I could do to get R up and running?

I was able to fix this issue - there was a .Rdata file that was keeping a hold on RStudio, preventing me from starting the app. Once I deleted the .Rdata file, I was able to get RStudio to open fully.

Glad you were able to find a solution! Just in case you were interested in saving the data (or encounter this issue in the future), you could also rename the file so that it is not automatically sourced on load.

You also have the option to disable the default loading .RData files in RStudio using a variety of methods. The easiest is probably going to Tools -> Global Options -> General -> Basic (Workspace header):
