Date: 2018-08-20 at 19:30
Location: Taipei, Taiwan

Description Snippet:

Python / Scrapy / Django ,

Amelia McNamara - Key Attributes of a Modern Statistical Computing Environment

Date: 2018-08-21 at 12:00
Location: Halifax, Canada

Description Snippet:

(Rescheduled with apologies for the postponement)

Statistical computing tools are often separated into one of either: professional or educational tools. R is clearly a professional tool yet much of the variety of its functionality stems from the education and research industry. For decades R has remained a category leader in its provision of a functional, data as a first-class-object programming environment. Additionally R maintains its flexibility through the CRAN repository of extensions for newly required features or updates to methods which prevents users from "experiencing out" and off of the platform. What other factors are there to consider which make R a great statistical computing environment? Amelia McNamara (St. Thomas) has been studying and researching statistical computing tools for several years and has recently developed a framework of attributes which she proposes are necessary in combination to support the adoption and usability of any statistical tool. What will the future of R look like? Will it be replaced by another language?
This presentation and video will introduce an initiative to integrate multiple languages into a new open source data science platform. Companies and individuals like RStudio, Wes McKinney, Hadley Wickham initiated and support this initiative.

Production ready R - getting started with R and Docker

Date: 2018-08-23 at 17:45
Location: Melbourne, Australia

Description Snippet:

If you've ever struggled with deploying R code and scripts into production, this Meetup is something you won't want to miss.

Abstract and bio are below. Big thanks to Servian for sponsoring the venue, food and drinks.

Abstract
R is a statistical computing environment and (increasingly) this also includes automated data pipelines, enterprise analytics applications, and web applications. Docker is an open platform that enables users to bundle code with dependencies and run it in multiple environments. When coupled with R it enables users to easily develop R scripts/applications that can be shared on different platforms, deployed in distributed cloud environments and slot into software projects alongside other components.

This talk is modified from a tutorial given at useR!2018. It covers an introduction to DevOps ideas for data science, Docker and some examples to help you get up and running.

This talk will be helpful if you have ever

Abstract: In this talk, I will try to convince you that if you have any of your own data or write any of your own R functions, then you should put them into an R package. Benefits include reproducibility and keeping everything together and accessible. Also, it’s really easy to do, and to prove it, I will b ... read more at the event page.

Big Data Ingest for Data Scientists

Date: 2018-08-23 at 18:30
Location: Phoenix, United States

Description Snippet:

Abstract: It's estimated that most data scientists spend only 20 percent of their time on actual data analysis, with 80 percent spent finding, cleaning, and reorganizing data. StreamSets Data Collector is an Apache 2.0-licensed open source project that lets you create dataflow pipelines to read data from a wide variety of sources, either as a continuous stream, or a batch job, apply transformations to get it into shape, and write it to big data platforms such as Hadoop, S3, Cassandra etc for analysis. Data scientists, data engineers and developers at dozens of companies use Data Collector to ingest vast amounts of data every day.

In this session, Pat Patterson, a technical director at StreamSets, will explain how to create dataflow pipelines using the Data Collector UI. We'll see how a simple pipeline can read and write data with no coding required, while custom login can be implemented with a minimal amount of scripting. As an example, we'll build a pipeline to read JSON-for ... read more at the event page.

R and Python study group

Date: 2018-08-25 at 10:00
Location: West des Moines, United States

Description Snippet:

Are you tired of learning and playing with Python and R alone? Would you like to get together with a few friends and learn together? I have been starting to learn R and Python for data science and following the typical route of videos and practice projects. I really want to ramp up my learning and exposure to different ways. Here is my proposal:

- Gather a small group of 2-5 and learn together.
- Meet at a coffee shop, library, or some other space that has Wi-Fi.
- Pick a project, data set or problem, then work to solve it with different tools.
- Keep it fluid and informal.
- Meet on a regular basis, say weekly to start, and adjust as needed.
- Aim to keep the meetings 2-4 hours long, but this can be adjusted to the project or group. People can come and go as needed.
- It does not have to be the same people each time, so you only have to commit to going once to check it out.

Are you interested? Show up at the meeting spot, have some coffee, meet ... read more at the event page.
