Update on accessing OS env. variables at run-time in docker?

I'm wondering if there has been any update in allowing users to access OS env. variables for shiny server? I know this has been addressed here, but I'm wondering if there has been any effort to resolve.

This becomes a particular sticking point when using cloud products (Azure, GCP or AWS) that allow you to inject env. variables at runtime, which helps with security.
