What does "RDS" stand for?

I agree saving R objects through saveRDS() rather than save() is good practice, as others have recommended. What does the term RDS stand for, though? Is it an abbreviation for "R data single" or "R data serialized"? (https://stat.ethz.ch/R-manual/R-devel/library/base/html/readRDS.html)

Not that it matters a whole lot, but spelling out abbreviations can be useful when teaching.

I don't know that RDS is an initialism. Like you, I mentally think of it as R data serialized or something to that effect, but there's nothing I've found that indicates that it's the intended interpretation.
This SO answer seems chock full of S's that would make for excellent retroactive backronym material :slight_smile:
