better pop-up windows in R from terminal

I like using R from the terminal. However default R in osx uses the xquartz window manager, which isn't that great.

Are there any packages that use a gtk, qt, or even cocoa windows to render plots faster than xquartz does?

I can't speak to any of those solutions, @pdeffebach, but the rmote package can deliver your plots via a web browser. It's designed as an alternative to X11 forwarding when you're working on remote systems, but it works just as well locally and is faster than XQuartz in my experience. Plus, you get some nice extras like a history and the ability to save the plots from the browser
