Can't open RStudio

I've been unable to open RStudio 1.1.383 all week. It tried to open, takes forever and then I get a message to either terminate or keep waiting - neither of which solves my problem.

This issue started several months ago, but multiple attempts to open RStudio eventually worked. Unfortunately that is no longer the case. I've included a diagnostic report below.

I'm using R 3.4.3 on a MacBook OS 10.13.1.

Thanks in advance!!

Update: Installing an older version of RStudio (0.99.903) allows me to open RStudio, but if I upgrade to the newer version (1.0.153 or 1.1.383), it no longer opens.

Any one know why this is happening?

I could still use help with this issue. Although I am able to get some work done on an earlier version of RStudio, plotting will not work until I install a newer version of RStudio that DOES NOT work on my computer.

If you're willing to wipe out your settings, have you tried resetting the program's state?

I've actually already tried this a few times.

Do you have an .Rdata file that is being loaded at startup, or anything in an .Rprofile or .Rprofile.site file? Otherwise, I'm out of ideas -- hopefully someone more knowledgeable has some better ones!

Thanks Nick.

I've tried looking for .Rdata files on my macbook, but I've never been able to find one. If you know how to search for them, I'm open to deleting it. But if it's there, I don't know where.

Do you have any better luck with the current preview release of RStudio (v1.1.399 or greater)? You can download it at:

https://www.rstudio.com/products/rstudio/download/preview/

I just tried that preview version - it also doesn't work.

Hi all,

Thanks for all your thoughts so far.

Today I deleted all of the data in my RStudio Global Environment and also ran the following:
rm(list = lsf.str())
rm(list = ls.str(mode = 'numeric'))
unlink(".RData")

I'm not sure which (of if all) made the difference, but I've updated RStudio to 1.1.383 and so far everything I've tried works. fingers crossed

Awesome news!

If removing your old .RData resolved the issue, it's possible you were working with a very large R workspace (ie, with very large R objects / tables), and the attempt to restore that workspace was causing RStudio to hang. Could that be the case?

We should try to better indicate what RStudio is doing during initialization, so that issues of this form can be more easily diagnosed. Thanks!

Hi Kevin,

I'm not sure. I can't think of anything I work with being particularly large (and why it would work for an older version, but not the newer one?). But you'd probably have a better sense of that than me!

But yes, if there's some way to indicate why RStudio can't open, that would really help!

Tara

I had the same problem when updating and removed Rdata with
unlink(".RData"), now it works.

Typing this in the terminal worked: rm /Users/bita/.RData
