Default app session and idle timeout in open-source shiny-server

Dear fellow R/Shiny developers,

Can someone explain how the application init/idle timeout works and is managed by shiny-server (open source)?
How to effectively handle session timeouts from the application side? Any thoughts for a production-like scenario?
Found some JS-based solutions using mouse events.
The documentation says session-timeout is available with 'Pro' version only.
