Difference between model$residuals and residuals vs fitted?

Hi, I have a doubt of the interpretation of the residuals plot and the residuals vs fitted plot
If I am right when I see the residuals plot I am checking for normality and homoscedasticity and when I checking the residuals vs fitted plot, am I checking for linearity? and why?

model$residuals

residuals vs fitted

Yes, looking at the residuals vs fitted can give a clue about nonlinearity. For example, if the plot was U-shaped that would suggest nonlinearity.

The residuals plot might indicate heteroskedasticity if you found parts of the plot where the scatter was much more spread out than in other parts. It doesn't say anything about normality, but normality in a large sample is of no importance anyway.
