I am planning to use /etc/rstudio-connect/rstudio-connect.gcfg to connect to LDAP server. Not sure if I need a licence key. Is that required?

I'm not sure I follow your question. RStudio Connect is a professional product that does require a license key. You can typically use RStudio Connect without a license key during the first 45 days which is called an evaluation period. During that time, all Connect capabilities are available including LDAP connectivity.
