tennistravel - Shiny Contest Submission

tennistravel

Authors: Etienne Bacher

Abstract: This application computes the distance made by each male tennis player for each year of their career. It also uses this distance to compute their carbon footprint in terms of plane travel. It covers all players from 1968 to 2020.

Full description: The ATP Tour (i.e the list of male tennis tournaments during a year) spreads all over the world. Tennis players participate in some of them and therefore travel a lot. This means that they have by far a greater carbon footprint than average. The aim of this Shiny app is to give a glimpse of the magnitude of this carbon footprint.

Using data on tennis tournaments from 1968 to 2020, I compute the distance made by every player in each year of their career. This distance is then converted into a carbon footprint thanks to the package footprint. In this application, the user is able to choose a male tennis player and to see the maximum distance and carbon footprint he made in a single season, as well as the evolution of these values.
