Generating an index with bookdown is surprisingly easy and works well for me.
Adding a list of abbreviations (using LaTeX's nomenclature package - but other solutions are of course welcome) seems to be more tricky.
One can add the necessary calls of the LaTeX macros in analogy to the makeindex calls.
The point where I'm struggling is how to trigger the makeindex call, which is necessary to generate the list of abbreviations.
