Using knitr, how to appropriately caption multi-page figures made with ggforce?

In a report made with a .Rnw document, I use the ggforce package, function facet_wrap_paginate, to produce grids of graphs that span multiple pages. Given some multi-page figure, I would like to apply at least one caption to the figure. The chunk option fig.cap="sample label" will apply the same text caption to each page, but also increments the figure counter. This does not seem to be a good outcome if we wish to apply differing captions, or refer to a particular page specificallly.
One solution might be to apply a caption to each page of figures specifying that it is page i of (max) n pages. I would also like to know how to refer to either individual pages of the figures, or alternatively the collection. What is a good way to proceed?
